If you don’t already believe everyone is jumping on the cloud-computing bandwagon, it’s time to change your tune: Even major government agencies are making the change.
The U.S. General Services Administration, Department of the Interior, Department of Agriculture, NASA, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are just a few of the major government agencies that have transitioned or are in the process of transitioning to document management systems in the cloud.
Why make the switch?
According to an Information Week article, NASA conducted tests, comparing its own computing capabilities to those of Microsoft and Amazon, and found that public clouds are both more reliable and more cost-effective. In fact, the agency predicts “that up to 75% of new IT programs could begin in the cloud within five years” — and almost all of its public data may be moved to the cloud.
The Department of the Interior invested $10 billion in its transition, according to the article, which also describes the USDA as a government cloud service provider.
But while a lot of agencies are adopting the cloud, many of them are not reaching the FedRAMP Authority to Operate (ATO) — indicating that understanding of the long-term life cycle of cloud adoption is something that these agencies are still working out. These early adopters are gathering the information that will help pave the way for future cloud adopters.
Primary concerns
For government agencies, there are two primary concerns when it comes to adopting the cloud: security and budget. TransAccess addresses both of these concerns.
